Follow these commercial prepress standards to ensure your business cards, flyers, signs, and marketing collateral print with razor-sharp clarity, true-to-life colors, and precise edge-to-edge trimming.

2. Bleed & Safety Margins
Why bleed is necessary and how to calculate exact canvas sizes for industrial guillotine cutters.
0.125" Bleed Requirement
Commercial print runs are stacked and sliced in high-speed industrial cutting presses. While aligned with microscopic lasers, minor mechanical blade shifting of up to 1/16" is natural.
To eliminate accidental white paper borders along the edges of your finished product, you must stretch background graphics and photos 0.125" (1/8") beyond the trim line.

Safe Zone Margins
The Safe Zone is the inner boundary where all essential visual elements must reside. If text or important logos are placed right against the cut line, they risk being partially trimmed off.
Maintain a minimum of 0.125" (1/8") padding inside the cut line. For multi-page booklets, presentation folders, or heavy rigid signs, we recommend 0.25" padding.
Keep phone numbers, website URLs, and fine logos at least 0.25" away from the outer bleed perimeter (0.125" bleed + 0.125" safety margin).
3. Color Mode: CMYK vs. RGB
How four-color process printing differs from backlit digital displays and how to achieve velvety rich blacks.
CMYK Four-Color Process
Commercial offset and digital presses print exclusively using CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) inks. Digital screens (monitors, smartphones) emit light in RGB (Red, Green, Blue).
Submitting artwork in RGB or Pantone will trigger an automated conversion to CMYK. Ultra-bright neon tones (fluorescent greens or intense electric blues) that look radiant on back-lit LED screens will appear slightly darker or more muted on physical paper.
Rich Black vs. 100% K
Using only 100% K (0/0/0/100) for large dark backgrounds results in a washed-out, dark greyish appearance because paper stock absorbs the single ink layer.
For dense, deep, saturated black backgrounds, use our tested Rich Black Formula. For fine text under 24pt, use 100% K only to avoid blurry ink registration!

4. Image Resolution & DPI
Selecting the proper pixel density to ensure crystal clear graphics without pixelation.
Handheld Commercial Items
Business cards, postcards, brochures, flyers, booklets, and labels are viewed close-up (within arm's length).
All raster graphics, photos, and background artwork must be exported at 300 DPI at 100% of final print size. Taking low-res 72 DPI images from websites and scaling them up will produce visibly blurry, pixelated results.
Vector logos (AI, EPS, SVG) have infinite resolution and never pixelate!
Large Format Signage & Banners
Outdoor vinyl banners, Coroplast yard signs, foam boards, and trade show displays are viewed from several feet or meters away.
For items larger than 36", a resolution of 150 DPI at 100% scale is standard and delivers stunning clarity while keeping PDF file sizes manageable and within upload limits.
Billboards & building wraps: 100 DPI at full scale.
5. Converting Fonts to Outlines
Prevent font substitutions and missing character errors during automated prepress RIP processing.
Why Outlining Is Essential
When a PDF containing live text fonts is processed by our printing plates RIP server, any font not fully embedded will be substituted with a system default font (like Courier or Arial), destroying your layout.
Converting fonts to outlines turns typography into vector paths, locking letter spacing, kerning, and styling permanently into place.

Minimum Font Size Standards
Offset printing presses deposit physical liquid ink on fibrous paper stock. Tiny text can "fill in" or appear broken if too small or fine.
- Dark Text on Light Background: Minimum 7 pt font size.
- White / Reversed Text on Dark Background: Minimum 8 pt font size with bold weight to prevent ink bleed fill-in.
- Fine Serif Typefaces: Avoid thin serifs under 9 pt on dark backgrounds.
6. Spot UV & Foil Stamping Masks
How to construct precise secondary vector masks for raised Spot UV gloss and metallic foil finishes.
Mask Preparation Rules
Spot UV gloss and foil stamping are applied as a physical secondary layer on top of your printed CMYK graphics. A separate black-and-white mask file tells our precision UV coating plates exactly where to apply the effect.
The mask file must match the exact same dimensions, bleed, and alignment as your main CMYK artwork file.
• 100% Solid Black (K:100): Areas that will receive the finish.
• 100% Pure White (K:0): Areas that will have NO finish.
Critical Mask Dos and Don'ts
Specialty finish masks must consist exclusively of vector solid shapes. Avoid the common pitfalls below:
- No Gradients or Shading: Spot UV and foil cannot fade or feather. Use only 100% solid black.
- No Drop Shadows: Raster shadows in mask files will cause coating errors.
- Bleed Alignment: If UV or foil extends off the edge, bleed it 0.125" on the mask file just like the CMYK artwork.

7. Recommended File Formats & Exports

Recommended Format: PDF/X
Our automated RIP prepress systems are optimized for PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-4 standard exports.
Exporting with these presets ensures that all fonts are embedded, color profiles are standardized to CMYK, and high-resolution images are preserved without downsampling.
Maximum Upload Size: 100 MB per file.
Double-Sided Upload Guidelines
For items printed on both sides (such as 4/4 double-sided business cards, postcards, or brochures), you can submit your artwork in either of two ways:
- Option A (Recommended): A single 2-page PDF file where Page 1 is Front and Page 2 is Back.
- Option B: Two separate files clearly named (e.g.
Front.pdfandBack.pdf). Our uploader lets you assign roles easily.
